NATIONAL THEME: "God, Home, Country"

The Berks County Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), was formed October 12, 1892. There were 15 original charter members including one of Conrad Weiser's great-great-granddaughters. The chapter was formed two years after the National Society was organized in Washington, DC. It was the seventh chapter formed in the state of Pennsylvania and the 29th in the nation. There are now 95 chapters in Pennsylvania and several thousand across the nation including chapters in England and France.

Our chapter currently has 126 members and is aligned closely with the Conrad Weiser Society, the local chapter of the Children of the American Revolution (CAR), as well as the Governor Joseph Hiester Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).

The DAR promotes American history and patriotism, and our chapter members actively promote historical appreciation, patriotic service, and education. Within the school community, we encourage the preservation of American heritage as well as preparation of students for citizenship as the future leaders of our world.

Some of our community activities include:

  • Sponsorship of the annual American History Essay Contest for 5th - 8th grade students in all Berks County schools. In 2015 our winner was also the winner of the Pennsylvania state American History Essay Contest.
  • Sponsorship of the annual Good Citizen contest for Berks County high school seniors.
  • The annual Famous Ladies Tea to provide an educational and entertaining program about famous women in American history and to raise funds for the Good Citizen scholarship award.
  • Presenting annual awards to deserving cadets in the local JROTC programs at Boyertown, Reading, and Wilson high schools.
  • Participation in the bi-annual naturalization ceremony held at the Berks County Court House.
  • Marching in local parades for patriotic celebrations.
  • Maintenance of the DAR Gardens at Conrad Weiser Homestead with fall and spring work days.
  • Contributions of clothing and personal necessities to local homeless veterans.
